Mary Dzon The Quest for the Christ Child in the Later Middle Ages

Beginning in the twelfth century, clergy and laity alike started wondering with intensity about the historical and developmental details of Jesus' early life. Was the Christ Child like other children, whose characteristics and capabilities depended on their age? Was he sweet and tender, or formidable and powerful? Not finding sufficient information in the Gospels, which are almost completely silent about Jesus' childhood, medieval Christians turned to centuries-old apocryphal texts for answers. In The Quest for the Christ Child in the Later Middle Ages , Mary Dzon demonstrates how these apocryphal legends fostered a vibrant and creative medieval piety. Popular tales about the Christ Child entertained the laity and at the same time were reviled by some members of the intellectual elite of the church. In either case, such legends, so persistent, left their mark on theological, devotional, and literary texts. The Cistercian abbot Aelred of Rievaulx urged his monastic readers to imitate the Christ Child's development through spiritual growth; Francis of Assisi encouraged his followers to emulate the Christ Child's poverty and rusticity; Thomas Aquinas, for his part, believed that apocryphal stories about the Christ Child would encourage youths to be presumptuous, while Birgitta of Sweden provided pious alternatives in her many Marian revelations. Through close readings of such writings, Dzon explores the continued transmission and appeal of apocryphal legends throughout the Middle Ages and demonstrates the significant impact that the Christ Child had in shaping the medieval religious imagination.

Paul O. Bischoff Mary Gave God a Body

God came to earth as an illegitimate child. Mary, his mother, was a human being, not a porcelain figure in a nativity scene with a halo. She was a young teenage Mediterranean woman who wanted to save herself for marriage. Then an angel told her she'd become pregnant by the Holy Spirit. This book intends to dismantle the fictitious Mary made in the image of religion. Rather, the human Mary of the Scriptures who gave God a body is the subject of this book. Mary was the mother of God, not the mother of the church. She is blessed without being divine, an ordinary girl who obeyed God and supernaturally delivered the Savior of the world. It is only a human Mary who can be accessible to the church as a model disciple of her son, Jesus Christ.

Saint Louis de Montfort True Devotion to Mary

Written in 1712 by Saint Louis de Montfort, this influential Catholic treatise remained virtually unknown until it was discovered in France in 1842. Finally published in 1843 in its original French, the work became an instant success and would later have a profound impact on many Catholic popes. Pope John Paul II, a most devout believer in the importance of the Blessed Virgin Mary, said reading “True Devotion to Mary” was a “decisive turning point” in his life. Montfort believed that the easiest and most perfect path to Jesus Christ lay in worship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Through devout dedication to Mary, one could find salvation and eternal life with Jesus Christ. By praising, loving and honoring Mary, one was truly loving and honoring God and Jesus Christ. This devotion to Mary was the most pure and true devotion, showed a profound love and commitment to Jesus Christ, and would bring about wonderful spiritual effects in the worshipper. The greatest book on Marian spirituality ever written, “True Devotion to Mary” continues to inspire and guide the faithful to this day.

Anonymous The Quest of the Holy Grail (The High History of the Holy Graal)

Here is the tale of the search for the Holy Grail, the vessel that received the blood of Christ upon the day of his Crucifixion. This anonymous story is thought to be a continuation of the French trouvère Chrétien de Troyes' unfinished «Perceval, The Story of the Grail.» Written sometime in the early 13th century, this Arthurian Romance remains unique for its high amount of allegorical mysticism and use of Celtic lore. Our hero Perceval here goes through various toils and trials in his continued search for the Holy Grail. An important piece of the Arthurian canon, «The Quest for the Holy Grail» adds to the rich world of King Arthur's court. Again we meet Gawain, Lancelot, and Galahad, as their quest for divinity moves forth.

Lyman C.D. Kulathungam The Quest

The human spirit seems incapable of being stagnant, ever pushing the boundaries of knowledge and experience. We try to understand life through questions regarding our own existence, the nature of the universe, and the nature of God. The question of our collective heart is the external manifestation of an internal longing–a quest, if you will. This thirst to understand reality can be seen in superstructures that are scientific, social, political, and especially religious.
When considering the doctrines, institutions, and rituals of religions, we observe certain core aspirations expressed by the people of these communities. These aspirations generate from an underlying quest which seeks a way out of our perceived predicament: a salvific quest. Regardless of whether we view ourselves as religious, pre-religious, post-religious, or non-religious, we find ourselves involved in such a quest; it seems to be an integral part of our human personhood.
Using a unique framework of analysis, this book explores Christ's relevance to the quest expressed by the communities of eight major living religions–a relevance that neither degrades Christ nor demeans other «saviors.» Christ is not part of the human quest, but is well equipped to satisfy that quest.

Matthew J. Marohl Joseph's Dilemma

The story of the birth of Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew is told in eight verses. Embedded in this short narrative is «Joseph's dilemma.» Listeners are told that, «When Mary had been engaged to Joseph, but before they lived together, she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit» (1:18). What happens next has long been debated. We are made to assume that Joseph discovers that Mary is pregnant, but that he does not know that she is with child from the Holy Spirit. This information is made known to Joseph later by an angel of the Lord who appeared to him in a dream. In the meantime, Joseph must decide what he will do with Mary. We are told, «Joseph, being a righteous man and unwilling to expose her to public disgrace, planned to dismiss her quietly» (1:19). The discussion of this verse generally focuses on two questions. First, did Joseph suspect Mary of adultery? Second, if he did suspect Mary of adultery, what were his options? While there is some diversity in the way that these questions are answered, the majority of modern interpreters envision only one option–that of divorce. The dilemma, then, is whether Joseph will divorce Mary «publicly» or «privately.» While these questions are important, neither adequately addresses Joseph's dilemma. In this book, Matthew J. Marohl argues that early Christ-followers understood Joseph's dilemma to involve an assumption of adultery and the subsequent possibility of the killing of Mary. Worded differently, Joseph's dilemma involves the possibility of an honor killing. If Joseph reveals that Mary is pregnant she will be killed. If Joseph conceals Mary's pregnancy, he will be opposing the law of the Lord. What is a «righteous» man to do?

Hans Bürger Being in Christ

'Being in Christ' is a central theme in the message of the gospel. It is central for understanding the relation of Christian believers and the church with Jesus Christ, their Lord. It determines the identity of a Christian. It is helpful for understanding the presence of Christ and his salvation in the present. It can be developed as an element of a theological ontology. Finally, it is a theme with a great integrating power.
In this book, the theme 'being in Christ' is analyzed in different perspectives. The attention is focused on the reality of 'being in Christ': its ontological implications. First, two representatives of the Reformed tradition are investigated: the English Puritan John Owen and the Dutch Neo-Calvinist Herman Bavinck. Second, a reconstruction of the Pauline and Johannine perspectives on 'being in Christ' is provided. Third, the theme is examined in the work of the English ethicist Oliver O'Donovan and the German-Swiss theologian Ingolf U. Dalferth. In the final chapter, the author gives his own systematic-theological proposal of a concept of 'being in Christ.'

Diane Glancy Mary Queen of Bees

Crippled in childhood, Mary Wesley, sister of John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, speaks of the Wesley household in first-person narrative built on the facts of her life. Mary lived in a strict Christian family, one of 19 children, 10 of whom survived. Her mother, Susanna Wesley, imposed a regiment where «not one child after a year old was heard to cry out.» Her father, Samuel Wesley, a minister at Epworth, could not provide for his family, and spent time in debtor's prison. The family taunted Mary's awkwardness and showed little sympathy for her affliction. At one point Mary addresses her family from the outside. «There go the ragged Wesley's. Beggars themselves. They are in a house so crowded love could not grow. Only survival. As plants overcrowded in a garden bend and twist their way toward sunlight, out of necessity smothering those closest to them.» Mary Queen of Bees is a study in hardship in early 18th century England. Through the rigors of despondency in the aftermath of her wounding, the brightness of Mary's spirit emerges. The novel of reactivated history pokes Mary's voice from childhood to her death in childbirth at the age of 37, when the bees leave.

Mary Ford-Grabowsky The Way of Mary

The way of Mary is to follow in her footsteps. Christians of all denominations are rediscovering the significance of the mother of Jesus, as films such as The Nativity Story and The Passion of the Christ portray her life in new and startling ways. Written for a popular audience, Mary Ford-Grabowsky's new book shares the wisdom of a lifetime of devotion to Mary. These new devotions, all of them inspired by the scenes and stories of the Gospels, comment on Mary's extraordinary life on earth and momentous influence on the human heart, male or female, ever since. Arranged in a two-week cycle, each of these devotions includes meditation, reflection, prayer, visualization, and ideas for freeing the creative spirit.

Wendel Sun A New People in Christ

What is union with Christ? What role does this theme play in the Epistle to the Romans? Does union with Christ have an Old Testament background or did Paul create the concept for his own theological purposes? These questions will be answered in this exegetical study of Romans. Special attention is given to Paul's use of Old Testament stories in relation to union with Christ. It will be shown that Paul understands union with Christ to be the climax of the human story–a story of creation and rebellion that includes all people, regardless of ethnic or social background. Those who believe in Jesus as the promised Messiah experience restoration as they move from union with Adam into union with Christ. United to Christ, the church finds unity in a new identity–as a new people in Christ.

Aiah Foday-Khabenje Competencies for Leading in Diversity

The patriarchal approach to leadership in the African context is indeed an enigma, judging from the unpredictable outcomes and the quest for effective leadership. In many ways, the secularized big-man in the public square is no different from the sacralised great-man of God in the church. The Lord Jesus Christ calls his followers to servant leadership. The secular world has also established the efficacy of the servant leadership approach for cutting-edge leadership. This book looks at the nature of evangelical associations in their diversity and what it takes for leaders to build unity and harmony for effectiveness, especially in the African context.

In The Legend of the Anti-Christ, Stephen Vicchio offers a concise and historical approach to the history of the idea of the Anti-Christ, including precursors to the idea, the development of the idea in the New Testament, as well as the understandings of the legend of the Anti-Christ in the history of Christianity. Vicchio also raises the question of why there is so much emphasis in the modern world about the idea.

Henry L. Novello Passionate Deification

In the past the passions were regarded as sicknesses of the soul due to Adam's sin. As the Redeemer, Christ shares in our humanity and experiences the passions, but given his divine status he quickly overcomes the passions by his superior reason as the Word. In effect, Christ is displayed as a Stoic sage who is unperturbed by the passions. The book is critical of this traditional perspective for its inability to think of the Incarnation as the Word's real participation in our humanity. Christ is not a Stoic sage who displays an uninvolved holiness, but the Word become flesh who displays an astonishing breadth and intensity of emotional life, which reveals what it means for the fullness of divinity to dwell bodily in him. Reformed theology moved beyond the traditional perspective in affirming the strong emotions of Christ as proof of his humanity, but Christ's divinity was given insufficient attention. The book proposes a complex view of Christ's emotions, which are regarded not merely as proof of his humanity, but reveal the personal attributes of divinity communicated to his humanity. To observe Christ's emotions is to witness the mutual interaction of humanity and divinity in his person, which accomplishes our salvation (deification). To imitate Christ, then, means that Christ's emotions become the emotions of his followers, so that by seeing as God sees and feeling as God feels, they go forth in obedience to Christ's commandment to love one another as he has loved us, which is to live the way of the cross for the sake of the ongoing embodiment of God in the world.
